  • Episode 21: Getting Cliterate - Sex, Love & Science with Lauren Muratore

It was only in 1988 the clitoris was mapped.  Science still has yet to figure out female anatomy.  Luckily, I was able to speak with Anita Brown-Major, who is member of the international Cliterati Committee and director of Thrive Rehab, and discuss female anatomy in depth!  Would you believe there is still little research about women bodies?  April 2024 Anita did a pubmed search to find 50k+ articles related to male genitalia, compared to only 2000 articles that mentioned the clitoris.  She poignantly says nature likes diversity and people don’t- and how this relates to the vulva- and how we are all so different.  We also discuss non concordant touch and what happens to the body when it is touched, how context is important, and how that also relates to consent and unwarranted sexual touch. • Sexual Response Systems

The below tutorial helps explain the sexual response systems that cause the bulbs of the clitoris to become engorged with blood and expand. To help people communicate this system, we have created two additional resources to the Cliterate model, called the 'Clit Pack' , containing a non-engorged clitoris and glow-in-the-dark engorged clitoris. Content warning! This video mentions sexual assault and we know this can be distressing for some viewers and listeners. If you need resources or support go to beyondblue.org or for 24 hour free counselling in Australia, the number for Lifeline is 13 11 14 . Please look after yourself. Psychogenic Response The animation below illustrates the Psychogenic Pathways Response, where seeing, thinking, smelling or touching sends information down your spinal cord and results in engorgement of the clitoris. Reflexogenic Response The animation below illustrates the Reflexogenic Pathways Response, which takes place at the S2 to S4 part of your spinal cord. In response to someone being touched on the vulva, a message is sent to the spinal cord returning an immediate reflex response directly back from the S2–S4 region to the area, starting the engorgement process. This a more automatic response to sensation in the genital area – without involvement from the brain. The response is not under voluntary control and is not linked to consent or enjoyment. (Sexual non-concordance).
